Sandy Living
History

The first inhabitants of what is now Sandy were roaming Piute, Shoshone and Bannock Indians and permanent settlers came in the 1860s. Mining was the area's first industry and Sandy provided supplies, hotels, brothels and saloons to miners. In 1873, the railroad connected Sandy to Salt Lake City. Thanks to this innovation, ore could be moved easily out of the area and supplies and people could move in. When the mines failed in the 1890s, the area turned to agriculture to sustain itself. Sandy was incorporated in 1893 and today the Sandy City Museum celebrates the town's history and development.

Recreation

Recreational activities are plentiful in the area, thanks to its proximity to the Wasatch Mountains. Big Cottonwood Canyon is nearby and visitors can hike, bike, picnic, rock climb, camp and fish in the summer. In the winter, skiers swoosh down the slopes at Solitude and Brighton ski resorts. The thickly-forested canyon area also offers many lakes for water activities. Little Cottonwood Canyon, also nearby, is home to Snowbird and Alta ski resorts. The mouth of this glacially-carved canyon provided the stone blocks used to build the Salt Lake Mormon Temple. Wild mountain goats can still be seen on its rocky slopes. Popular summer activities include hiking, camping, picnicking, and rock climbing, while Albion Basin at Alta puts on a spectacular wildflower show every spring. Don't forget your camera!

Culture & Museums

Utah's capital, Salt Lake City, is an easy drive from Sandy. Cultural offerings are abundant throughout the city. Salt Palace is home of the Utah Symphony and the Salt Lake Art Center. Museums are many and varied: the Children's Museum of Utah has interactive exhibits and displays and a playground, while on display at the Fort Douglas Military Museum are military uniforms from the Civil War to Operation Desert Storm.

The Pioneer Memorial Museum houses textiles and furniture from the 19th century, a doll collection, and antique vehicles and farm machinery. The Museum of Church History traces the history of Mormonism and the flight of the Mormons out of Illinois to Utah. Take a trip to outer space any day at the Hansen Planetarium, where displays and interactive exhibits provide learning experiences for all ages. The International Peace Gardens has gardens from 14 nations, each showcasing a different country's culture and heritage.

Salt Lake City

Families can choose from many outdoor activities in Salt Lake City. The Great Salt Lake is the saltiest lake in the country. Its water supports only blue-green algae and brine shrimp and allows visitors who venture into it to float effortlessly. Antelope Island State Park offers swimming, beaches, hiking trails, guided horseback rides, and a boat launch. Pronghorn antelope, elk, deer, bobcats, coyotes, birds and bison live on the island. To the west of the Great Salt Lake is the Great Salt Lake Desert, home of the Bonneville Salt Flats where land speed records have been set, broken and set again. For those seeking a less salty water experience, the Raging Waters water park has heated pools, slides, a wave roller coaster, and a wave pool.

Shopping

Shopping opportunities here are diverse, ranging from the finest modern shopping centers to unique boutiques and antique shops. Crossroads Plaza is one of the largest covered downtown shopping areas in the country and houses four floors of restaurants, shops, and offices. Antiques can be found at Gardner Historic Village, while some of the shops, restaurants and businesses at Trolley Square are located in refurbished trolley cars. Cottonwood Mall, one of the oldest malls west of the Mississippi, has large department stores, shops, theaters and restaurants.

Local Sports

For the sports enthusiast, Energy Solutions Arena is home of the Utah Jazz. Franklin Quest Field hosts the Anaheim Angels' farm team, the Bees. The Utah Grizzlies skate the ice at the E Center, and the Utah Freezz indoor soccer team uses this arena to kick the ball around as well.
